Critical Illness
Cover
Sometimes the principle income provider
does not pass away, but instead becomes extremely ill and cannot
earn an income any longer.
This can be just as financially burdensome as an actual death,
as the same lack of income results in both cases. But if you have
critical illness cover you can deal with the illness in the family
without having to worry about paying the bills and fulfilling all
your financial responsibilities. In the event of an illness that
affects the main income provider’s ability to attend work
and earn an income, critical illness cover provides an income that
can be used to keep the bills paid and the family well fed. Illnesses
that are considered critical are those such as cancer, which stop
a person from being able to receive their regular income. Usually
the illness is severe enough to cause the provider to be unable
to ever work again, so an insurance policy that has critical illness
cover can be very important. If you suffer from such an illness
and are covered by this type of insurance you receive a lump sum
amount at the time of diagnosis, which can be taken advantage of
immediately. This is beneficial because often the illness at the
time of diagnosis is serious enough to have to be treated immediately,
which means the money is also needed immediately. Once the main
income provider is in hospital or undergoing treatment it is impossible
to receive an income, except from the insurance payout.
Types of critical illness insurance
There are several ways to apply for critical
illness cover. You can take out a “stand alone” policy,
which is taken out by itself, or you can append it to your whole
or term life insurance policy as an added benefit, along with
other added coverage that may apply to your family and that is
a beneficial extra feature. This makes your life insurance policy
contain all the coverage you need in the event of an illness or
death. You don’t have to worry about either situation, or
about handling two different insurance policies. You will probably
also save money because all your insurance coverage will come
from the one insurance policy to which you make payments, rather
than from two separate policies. When you apply for critical illness
cover the set amount you must pay is determined by factors such
as your age, family history, whether or not you smoke and the
level of cover you desire.
